Electrician Invoicing Guide for South Africa

Published 1 February 2025

How electrical contractors in SA should structure quotes and invoices for COC work, installations, and maintenance.

Quoting electrical work professionally

Electrical quotes should clearly separate inspection fees, labour, materials, and certificate of compliance (COC) costs. Ambiguous quotes lead to disputes — especially on older properties where unforeseen issues arise.

Always state your quote validity period. The Trade Kit adds a 'valid until' date automatically on every quote.

COC and compliance documentation

While the COC itself is a separate compliance document, your invoice should reference the work covered and the COC number if applicable. This creates a clear paper trail for property owners and insurers.

Invoicing for different job types

DB board upgrades, prepaid meter installations, and full rewiring each have different cost structures. Itemise cable runs, breakers, earth leakage units, and labour hours so clients understand the scope.

For commercial work, include your payment terms and reference any purchase order number the client provides.
